After 14 months of work, a private cloud region spanning two active-active data centres has helped the client migrate 320 applications and cut infrastructure costs by 28%.
Zentrova's Cloud division has handed over a private cloud region to one of Vietnam's leading financial groups. The 14-month programme brought together 95 engineers from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and is among the largest infrastructure projects Zentrova has ever delivered.
Background
The client was running more than 300 applications on traditional server infrastructure, many of them over a decade old. Scaling up for each new product took two to three months, while requirements for data residency and availability kept getting stricter. The group needed a platform as flexible as a public cloud provider, with data remaining entirely inside its own data centres.
The solution
- An active-active architecture across two data centres, keeping recovery time under 15 minutes in the event of an incident.
- A Kubernetes container platform of more than 1,800 nodes, centrally managed and automatically scaled to demand.
- A self-service portal that lets development teams spin up new environments in 20 minutes instead of several weeks.
- Infrastructure as code: every configuration is versioned, reviewed and deployed through a CI/CD pipeline.
- Defence in depth with micro-segmentation, data encryption and continuous security monitoring.
Migration without disruption
The biggest challenge was moving 320 applications without affecting transactions for millions of customers. The team grouped the applications into 12 waves by criticality, ran the old and new environments side by side during the transition, and scheduled cut-overs for off-peak hours. The entire migration was completed without a single major incident. Business teams were kept informed at every stage, which built confidence across the organisation.
Outcomes
Three months after go-live, the client's infrastructure costs are down 28% and server utilisation has risen from 22% to 65%. Time to market for a new feature has fallen from two months to two weeks.
